Background

Amy Rassen was raised in Brookline, Massachusetts. She received her Bachelor of Art's degree from Brandeis University and her Master's in Social Work (MSW) degree from Washington University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a certified Conservator, Geriatric Case Manager, and a Residential Care for the Elderly Administrator. After college, Amy Rassen served as a VISTA volunteer in Los Angeles and then as a child welfare worker in the St. Louis Missouri Division of Welfare. After getting her MSW degree, she became a medical social worker at Children's Hospital of San Francisco (now California Pacific Medical Center).

She then joined Jewish Family and Children's Services (JFCS) in 1978, where she founded and operated Parents Place. The Parents Place program, a comprehensive family resource center for parents and children, is now in five JFCS locations in the Bay Area, serving 20,000 people annually.

In 1985 Ms. Rassen became the Associate Executive Director of Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties, a position that she held until November 2006. As the Associate Executive Director of JFCS, Ms. Rassen was responsible for multiple aspects of institutional advancement. In this capacity she implemented major service and research projects; directed internal operations, fiscal planning and management; oversaw evaluation, quality control and improvement for agency services and programs; developed and ensured revenue generating streams enabling JFCS' self-sufficiency, including fee-based programs, contracts and grants; provided direct supervision to key program staff; and represented the Agency to the community on policy and planning matters.

Ms. Rassen also consulted to countless organizations, mentored professionals and taught students the art of managing a non-profit entity.

As a result of her successes with initiating and funding start-ups, Ms. Rassen was recruited by the Sandler Foundation as its first Executive Director to develop a national fundraising organization whose mission is to prevent, treat and cure asthma through research, advocacy and education. The American Asthma Foundation is dedicated to helping the 23 million Americans who suffer from asthma.

Ms. Rassen was subsequently recruited by the California Prison Health Care Receivership to bring her expertise in long-term care and organizational management to revamp the health care system that serves 175,000 inmates of California’s 33 adult prisons.
